Understanding Your Condition

Alcoholism, or alcohol dependence, is a progressive condition characterised by a strong urge to drink despite problems arising from continued use. Many people exist on a scale of alcohol use from occasional/social drinkers (a few times a month or less), to risky drinkers (those who regularly consume alcohol above recommended guidelines, or have binge-drinking episodes.

Individuals dealing with alcoholism often feel they have lost control over their desire to drink and are unable to stop, even when they recognise the harm it causes in their lives.

Increased alcohol use often develops as a coping mechanism in response to grief, trauma, stress, or other mental health issues. At Aston Private, we focus on identifying and treating the underlying causes of alcohol use, not just the symptoms.

Recognising the Signs of Alcohol Dependency

Signs of alcohol dependency include physical dependence, where the body adapts to regular alcohol consumption so that stopping suddenly can cause withdrawal symptoms such as sweating, nausea, tremors, anxiety, and potentially seizures. You may experience loss of control, struggling to stop drinking once you’ve started or being unable to limit the amount of alcohol you consume.

Increased tolerance means needing more alcohol to feel the same effects you once achieved with smaller amounts. You might also notice prioritising alcohol, where drinking becomes more important than work, relationships, health, or hobbies that once mattered to you.

If you’re uncertain about whether you have a problem with alcohol, the AUDIT (Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test) is a simple screening tool that can help determine if your alcohol consumption is considered risky or hazardous.

How we treat alcohol addiction & dependency

We believe there is no one-size-fits-all approach to treatment. Each client at Aston Private receives a unique, tailored program incorporating our comprehensive, holistic approach to treatment.

Your treatment begins with a phone assessment conducted by one of our experienced psychologists. This assessment helps us to establish the level of medical care required for your detox and the length of time for you to detox from alcohol safely.

Comfortable, Medically-Supervised Detox

Our treatment programs for alcohol use and abuse usually include a safe and medically supervised detoxification. Abrupt cessation from drinking can induce uncomfortable and sometimes dangerous physical withdrawal symptoms. You will be under 24-hour per day medically-supervised care during the detox phase of your treatment.

Intensive Treatment for Alcohol Use and Abuse

Following detox, your intensive treatment program addresses the psychological, emotional, and behavioural aspects of alcohol dependency. Daily one-on-one therapy with our experienced psychologists helps you understand the root causes of your drinking, identify triggers, and develop healthier coping mechanisms. We utilise evidence-based approaches including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, motivational interviewing, and trauma-focused therapies when appropriate.

Psychiatric support is available for co-occurring mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, or PTSD that often accompany alcohol dependency. Our psychiatrists work collaboratively with your therapy team to ensure comprehensive care, including medication management when beneficial.

Group therapy and education provide peer support and help you understand the science of addiction, relapse prevention strategies, and skills for maintaining long-term sobriety. Holistic therapies including yoga, meditation, acupuncture, massage, and personal training support your physical recovery while teaching stress management techniques you’ll use for life.

Family involvement is encouraged when appropriate, helping repair relationships and educating loved ones about how they can support your recovery. Throughout your stay, you’ll work with your personal recovery mentor who provides additional guidance and support, often drawing from their own recovery experience.

Your program continues beyond residential treatment with our comprehensive aftercare plan, ensuring you have ongoing support, therapy connections, and resources to maintain your sobriety as you transition back to daily life.
