Clinical Governance & Quality of Care

Clinical Governance & Quality of Care

At Aston Private, clear clinical oversight, careful assessment, and ongoing communication among the professionals involved in each client’s treatment support personalised care.

We review each person’s care throughout their program to ensure it suits their health and circumstances. Qualified healthcare professionals make clinical decisions, and we arrange further medical assessments or external care when needed.

Assessing Suitability for Treatment

Before a residential or outpatient program begins, we take time to understand whether Aston Private is an appropriate setting for the person seeking care.

The assessment process considers the individual’s physical and mental health, current concerns, previous treatment, medication, personal circumstances and the level of support they may require.

Where appropriate, information from existing treating practitioners may also help inform treatment planning, with the individual’s consent.

Some people may require hospital-based care, specialist medical treatment or a higher level of psychiatric support than can safely be provided within a private residential or outpatient setting. Where this is identified, we will discuss more appropriate treatment options.

We continue to review suitability as treatment progresses.

Clinical Oversight

Clinical care is provided and overseen by appropriately qualified healthcare professionals.

Depending on the individual program, the treatment team may include medical practitioners, psychologists, psychotherapists, and other allied health professionals, alongside recovery mentors, personal support staff, and wellbeing practitioners.

Each professional works within their area of qualification and responsibility. Relevant team members communicate throughout the program so treatment remains coordinated and the team can identify and address changes in the client’s needs.

Managing Medical and Clinical Risk

The team considers clinical and medical risk from the start of treatment and reviews it throughout the program.

This may include assessing factors such as physical health, mental health, substance use, withdrawal risk, medication requirements and any other circumstances that may affect a person’s safety or suitability for treatment.

Where medical monitoring is required, the team incorporates it into the treatment plan based on clinical need.

If a person’s health changes during treatment, the team may seek further medical assessment, increase monitoring or recommend treatment in another healthcare setting.

Aston Private is not a hospital. When hospital-level care is required, the team makes appropriate escalation arrangements.

Clinical Documentation

Accurate documentation supports continuity, communication and safe care.

Professionals involved in treatment maintain appropriate records of their sessions, observations, assessments, and treatment recommendations in accordance with their professional responsibilities.

Relevant information is shared only when necessary for treatment and care coordination, and in accordance with consent, privacy requirements, and professional obligations.

Documentation also helps the team review progress, identify emerging concerns and adjust treatment where appropriate.

Multidisciplinary Review

A personalised program involves more than arranging a series of separate appointments.

Relevant members of the treatment team review the individual’s progress and communicate about matters that may affect care.

This multidisciplinary approach allows psychological treatment, medical care, recovery support and wellbeing services to work toward shared treatment goals.

The team composition and level of communication required will vary depending on the individual.

Where appropriate and with consent, an existing psychiatrist, psychologist, GP or other treating practitioner may also remain involved.

Privacy and Confidentiality

Privacy is central to the way Aston Private operates.

Aston Private handles information about an enquiry, assessment, or treatment program with discretion and in accordance with applicable Australian privacy requirements and professional healthcare obligations.

Aston Private staff and contractors must also comply with confidentiality requirements.

Information is not routinely shared with family members, employers, or other third parties without consent, except where law requires or permits disclosure, or where disclosure is necessary to respond to a serious risk to health or safety.

If an individual would like a partner, family member, or trusted support person involved in their care, they can discuss this as part of treatment planning.

Medication Management

Medication is managed according to the individual’s clinical needs and the responsibilities of the medical professionals involved in their care.

When medication is part of treatment, relevant medical practitioners may review current medicines, prescribing arrangements, potential risks, and the need for ongoing monitoring.

An appropriately qualified prescriber determines any changes to prescription medication. Clients are encouraged to discuss medication questions directly with the medical practitioner responsible for their care.

Escalation to Hospital or Specialist Care

Aston Private provides personalised residential and outpatient care, but in some circumstances treatment in a hospital or another specialist healthcare service is more appropriate.

If a person develops a medical or psychiatric concern that cannot be safely managed within the program, the treating team may arrange or recommend assessment by an appropriate hospital, emergency department or specialist service.

This may occur before admission or at any stage during treatment.

The priority is always to ensure that the person receives care in the setting most appropriate to their clinical needs.

Planning for Care Beyond the Program

Planning for ongoing care begins before a residential program ends.

The treatment team considers what support may help the individual maintain progress and continue working toward their longer-term health and recovery goals.

An ongoing care plan may include continued psychological or medical appointments, recovery mentoring, allied health support, family involvement where appropriate, community-based services or Aston Private’s ongoing support options.

If a current practitioner is involved, the plan may include ongoing support with their consent. The goal is to ensure a smooth transition from intensive treatment to appropriate support.

Care That Continues to Be Reviewed

Clinical governance is not a single assessment completed at admission.

Throughout treatment, we continue to consider whether the program remains appropriate, whether risks have changed and whether the individual’s care needs to be adjusted.

This ongoing review supports a treatment experience that is both highly personalised and clinically considered.
